🌹Roses, Dahlias & layered planting
⬇️ Helping you build a beautiful garden

April was the month my garden really started to si April was the month my garden really started to sing 🌷

This month gave me Daffodils, Magnolia moments, Anemones, tulips bringing the drama, and even a huge bumblebee properly enjoying the tulips like spring had finally arrived.

It felt like that real shift in the season, when the garden starts looking softer, fuller, and a bit magical again.

These are the flowers and moments that made April in my garden.

Save this for autumn planting inspiration ✨

That bare patch is not a personality trait. Start That bare patch is not a personality trait. Start the border.

This sleeper border was bare soil in November 2025. By April 2026, it was full of spring colour with shrubs, daffodils and Anemone blanda doing the heavy lifting.

A beautiful border does not start when everything is in flower. It starts when you stop overthinking, get the structure in, and let the seasons do their thing.

This is your reminder that even an empty patch of soil can turn into something joyful with a bit of planning and a few good plants.

Save this as proof that bare soil does not stay bare forever.

POV: you were just trying to be practical but your POV: you were just trying to be practical but your bare roots got the full nightclub experience

Potting them up now buys me time, helps them establish, and stops me panic-planting everything badly.
So yes, this is solid gardening advice.
It just happens to come with choreography.

How Daffodils and Tulips changed everything in the How Daffodils and Tulips changed everything in these new parts of my garden.

This is the first year of both my extended border and sleeper border, so naturally they’re still in that awkward stage where the structure is there, but everything needs time to grow in and knit together.

That’s exactly why spring bulbs are such a game changer.
The daffodils have added softness, light and that fresh spring lift. The tulips have brought the colour, the focal points and the little moments that make everything feel exciting.

Together, they’ve made these new borders feel far more established than they actually are.

It’s such a good reminder that in year one, bulbs do a lot of the heavy lifting. While the shrubs and perennials are still settling in, the bulbs make sure the garden still feels full, intentional and alive.

Honestly, they’ve made all the difference.

Free Dahlia plants? Dividing tubers has a reputa Free Dahlia plants?

Dividing tubers has a reputation for being scary, but honestly? It’s mostly just slicing up a clump so you can get more plants for free. Love that for us.

Yes, I did cut myself, because clearly I believe in full commitment to the gardening content. Please be more careful than me. Sharp knife, slow movements, steady hand.

But genuinely, once you know what you’re looking for, it’s nowhere near as intimidating as people make out.

I started the season with a plan. A solid one, ac I started the season with a plan.

A solid one, actually. Then the tubers kept tubering, the seedlings multiplied, one rose completely checked out, and Socks saw the gap in leadership.

He has now appointed himself Head Gardener.

Main duties include seedling surveillance, quality control, and judging every decision I make from across the room.
Honestly, at this point, I work for him.

Your Dahlia tubers arrived… don’t just chuck them Your Dahlia tubers arrived… don’t just chuck them in a pot.
First job? Clean them up. I always snip off any dangling, damaged or rotting bits so I can properly check what’s viable before potting anything on. It takes two minutes and could save you a lot of disappointment later.

Partial shade can be awkward, but once you stop fighting the conditions and plant for the space you actually have, everything starts to make more sense. Softer, fuller, prettier, and a lot less disappointing.

Have you got a pot or border in your garden that needs this kind of intervention?

If I hear “you don’t need any more Dahlias” one mo If I hear “you don’t need any more Dahlias” one more time… I’m going to lose it.
Respectfully, every Dahlia is different and I will not be explaining myself further.

This delivery has me acting like I’ve never seen a flower before, and the worst part is… this isn’t even my last dahlia delivery.

Summer me will be smug about it, so really this is an investment.

Be honest: how many Dahlias is too many… or are we all done pretending that limit exists?

Spring equinox in the garden hits differently. Th Spring equinox in the garden hits differently.

The daffodils are out, the Forsythia is glowing, and the Magnolia is only just beginning. It is not peak spring yet, but you can feel the shift. The light lasts longer, the garden feels brighter, and suddenly everything looks full of promise again.

This is one of my favourite moments in the season. Not because everything is in full bloom yet, but because it feels like the garden is waking up in real time.

If you want more bees, grow these. These are 5 pl If you want more bees, grow these.

These are 5 plants I’d happily grow again because they don’t just look beautiful, they actually bring pollinators into the garden too. Salvia Caradonna, Verbena bonariensis, Geum Orange Pumpkin, Alliums and Dahlia Princess Nadine have all earned their place for me.

I’m always looking for plants that work hard and provide structure, colour and pollinator value is the dream combination.

Which one would you add to your garden?

Annuals are my secret weapon for filling gaps fast Annuals are my secret weapon for filling gaps fast (and making pots look expensive).

Here’s my simple sowing plan:
• Feb–Apr (sow indoors): snapdragons, stock, cobaea
• Mar–Apr (sow indoors): cosmos, asters, phlox
• Apr–May (needs warmth): zinnias, sunflower, marigold
• Direct sow (easy wins): poppies, cerinthe, calendula

My rule: sow what you need + a little extra for germination.

Where are you filling gaps this year; pots or borders?

Roses aren’t just about colour. They’re structure Roses aren’t just about colour.

They’re structure, they anchor a border, soften hard edges and repeat through the season. Even before bloom time, the framework matters.

And the reward? A bouquet from the garden, not the shop.

Do you plant for structure or just for flowers?

Some I’m trialling in both. A few I’m growing outdoors including for my brother-in-law who doesn’t have a greenhouse.

First full season growing with a greenhouse… so we’re doing this properly.

If your dahlia tubers feel soft or squishy, don’t If your dahlia tubers feel soft or squishy, don’t plant them.
Soft usually means rot and they won’t produce strong growth.

Healthy dahlia tubers should feel firm and solid before you start waking them up.

I’m sad to lose some of mine this winter, including a few harder-to-find varieties, but that’s part of growing dahlias. I’ll be replacing them and starting again.

Have you lost any this year?

White is having a moment...Pantone’s Colour of the White is having a moment...Pantone’s Colour of the Year is Cloud Dancer and honestly?

White roses have been ahead of the trend all along.
In UK gardens, white isn’t boring.

It anchors a border.

It makes pinks glow.

It softens apricot.

It brings structure when everything else feels busy.

These are some of the most beautiful white roses I grow and are reliable repeat flowering.

If you’re planning your garden palette this year, don’t overlook white.

Comment WHITE 🤍 and I’ll tell you the varieties I grow.
